Best URL Shortener in 2026: the Buyer's Shortlist

Published October 16, 2026. Next review due by January 2027.

Disclosure: we make Rdyrct, and it is first on this list. The criteria and every competitor number are below so you can check the ranking against your own needs.

The best URL shortener in 2026 depends on what you pay for. Rdyrct is our top pick for branded links with privacy-first analytics, from $4 a month. Short.io has the most generous free plan. Rebrandly suits QR-heavy branding, Bitly suits large teams, and Dub suits high-volume developer teams. All five are compared below on price, custom domains, link limits and analytics history.

Key Takeaways

  • Custom domains are the dividing line. Bitly charges $29 a month before you get one, while Short.io and Rebrandly include one on a free plan and Rdyrct includes one from $4 a month.
  • "Links" means different things. Bitly and Rebrandly count links created per month. Short.io issues branded links once for the life of the account. Rdyrct caps the links you hold at one time.
  • Analytics history is the quiet upsell. Rdyrct keeps 7 days on Free, 30 on Hobby and 365 on Pro. Bitly gives 30 days on Core and one year only on its $199 Premium plan.
  • Dub has no free plan on its pricing page. Its plans start at $90 a month and are built for 10,000 new links a month or more.
  • Prices change often. Every figure here was read from the vendor's pricing page on October 16, 2026. Check the live page before you buy.

What a URL shortener actually is (and what it is not)

A URL shortener turns a long web address into a short one that redirects to it. You paste in a destination, get a short link, and every click on that link passes through the shortener's server on its way to the page. That one hop is the whole product, and it is also where everything useful happens. The server can count the click, record the country, device and referrer, and let you change the destination later without reprinting a poster or resending an email.

That is what separates a shortener from a plain redirect on your own website. A redirect you write by hand goes to one place and tells you nothing. A shortener gives you a dashboard, a link you can edit, and numbers on who used it. If you only need a redirect that never changes, you do not need a shortener at all. Our guide to 301 vs 302 redirects covers that case.

A shortener is also not a tracking system for individual people. Good ones count clicks and group them by country, device and source. Which ones store the visitor's IP address is worth asking about before you commit, because that is personal data in many places. A shortener is not a link-in-bio page, an email platform or an ad network either, though several of the tools below sell those as add-ons.

What you are really buying is three things: a domain your links appear on, a limit on how many you can have, and a history of the clicks they got. The criteria below measure exactly those.

How We Ranked These URL Shorteners

We used five criteria, each one a number you can read off the vendor's pricing page:

  1. Lowest monthly price with a custom domain. Branded links on your own domain are what most teams end up needing, so this is the real entry price.
  2. Links included at that price. A cheap plan with a tiny cap is not cheap.
  3. Custom domains included at that price. Agencies and multi-brand teams need more than one.
  4. Analytics history at that price. How far back you can look at click data.
  5. Free plan. Whether you can run a real branded link before paying anything.

A caveat on fairness: criterion one favors cheap, simple tools, and Short.io beats us on the raw numbers. We rank Rdyrct first for one reason beyond the numbers, which is that it never stores a visitor's IP address. If that does not matter to you, read the Short.io section first. Where a vendor did not state a figure, we say so instead of guessing.

The Best URL Shorteners in 2026

Below are five shorteners that cover the range from free to enterprise. Each section lists what the vendor's own pricing page states, followed by who it fits. Where sources conflicted, we used the vendor's page.

Rdyrct is a link shortener and QR code generator for teams, built on Cloudflare. Free gives you 30 short links, click tracking, 7 days of analytics and a free QR code generator, with no card and no trial clock. Hobby costs $4 a month and adds one custom domain with your own slugs, 500 links, five team members, 30 days of analytics and QR codes with your logo and colors. Pro costs $9 a month for 3,000 links, five custom domains per organization, three organizations, 25 team members and 365 days of analytics.

Clicks record only country, referrer, device and time. Rdyrct never stores an IP address. The API and the MCP connector for AI assistants are on every plan, and the code is public, so you can host it yourself with no caps. Only the organization owner pays, and one subscription covers every organization they own.

The trade-offs are plain. Free has no custom domain, and Rdyrct's link caps are lower than Short.io's. Analytics history on Hobby is 30 days.

Best suited for: Teams and agencies that want branded links on their own domain with analytics they can defend to a privacy reviewer. It also fits anyone who wants to self-host.

2. Short.io, best free plan for custom domains

Short.io has the most generous free plan here. Free covers 1,000 branded links, 50,000 tracked clicks a month, five custom domains and one user. The branded-link allowance is issued once and lasts the life of the account, while tracked clicks reset monthly. After 50,000 clicks, statistics are restricted but existing links keep working.

Paid plans, as shown in Short.io's comparison table, run Hobby at $5 a month for 2,500 branded links, 100,000 tracked clicks and seven domains. Pro is $18 for unlimited links and clicks and ten domains, and Team is $48 with 50 domains and unlimited users. The pricing page offers a "Save 17%" annual toggle but did not show annual amounts when we read it, and its table does not say which billing cycle the monthly figures use. We did not find a stated analytics retention period.

For a solo marketer or a small site, this is hard to beat on price. If you are weighing it against others, see our look at Short.io alternatives.

Best suited for: Individuals and small teams who want several branded domains for $0. It is also a good fit if you run many small sites.

3. Rebrandly, best for QR-heavy branding

Rebrandly puts QR codes on the same footing as links. Free includes 10 branded links and 10 QR codes a month, one custom domain plus a free rebrand.ly domain, and one workspace. QR codes and link galleries carry a watermark on Free, and password-protected links, link expiration and teammates are not included.

Essentials costs $11 a month ($8 billed annually, our reading of the page) for 250 links and 250 QR codes a month and two custom domains. Professional is $32 ($22 annual) for 1,500 links and QR codes, three domains and six months of conversion data. Growth is $149 ($104 annual) for 3,500, ten domains and one year of conversion data. The page lists four unlabeled prices per plan, so confirm the cycle on the live page. Enterprise is quote-only.

Rebrandly counts links and QR codes per month, so a campaign-heavy team can hit a cap quickly. For a head-to-head with the biggest name, see Rebrandly vs Bitly.

Best suited for: Brands that print QR codes on packaging and signage and want them on their own domain. Teams that need several workspaces can step up to Professional or Growth.

4. Bitly, best known and best for large teams

Bitly is the best-known name. Free allows 5 links and 2 QR codes a month, with ads. Core is $10 a month, annual only, for 100 links, 5 QR codes and 30 days of click data, and does not include a custom domain. Growth is $29 a month on annual billing for 500 links, 10 QR codes and 4 months of data. It is the first plan with a complimentary custom domain, marked with an asterisk for registration. Premium is $199 a month for 3,000 links, 200 QR codes and one year of data. Enterprise is custom, with two years.

The step from Growth at $29 to Premium at $199 has no plan between them. Only annual prices were shown for Growth and Premium, so month-to-month costs more. If you are leaving, migrating from Bitly covers keeping your existing links working.

Best suited for: Large teams that need enterprise contracts, SSO and a vendor their legal team already knows. It is a weaker fit for small teams that mainly want a custom domain.

5. Dub, best for high-volume developer teams

Dub targets teams that create links in volume. Its pricing page lists no free plan. It offers a 14-day trial of Business and Advanced, and Enterprise runs through a demo. Third-party sites disagree about whether a free tier still exists, so check the live page.

Business is $90 a month for 10,000 new links, 250,000 tracked events, 100 custom domains, 10 users and three years of analytics. Advanced is $300 a month for 50,000 new links, 1 million events, 250 domains, 20 users and five years. Enterprise is unlimited. A yearly toggle advertises a 10% discount, with no dollar amounts shown.

The limits are generous, but the entry price is the highest on this list, so Dub only makes sense if you will use the volume.

Best suited for: Product and growth teams that create thousands of links a month through an API. It is not a good match for a small team that needs a handful of branded links.

Side-by-Side Comparison

Each row applies the five criteria above to the cheapest plan with a custom domain. Figures come from each vendor's pricing page, read on October 16, 2026.

Tool Cheapest plan with a custom domain Links included Custom domains Analytics history Free plan with a domain?

What results look like

We do not have named customer case studies to publish yet, and we will not invent them. What we can show is what the data looks like in practice.

On a branded short link, a campaign owner sees clicks by day, plus country, device and referrer, with the destination editable after the link is live. That is the practical difference from a plain redirect, and it is the same on every tool in this list. FAQ

What is the best free URL shortener?

For custom domains, Short.io: its free plan lists five domains and 1,000 branded links. If you want a free plan with no card and no trial clock and do not need your own domain, Rdyrct's Free plan gives 30 links with click tracking.

How much does a custom domain cost on a URL shortener?

From $0 on Short.io and Rebrandly, $4 a month on Rdyrct Hobby and $29 a month on Bitly Growth. Dub starts at $90 a month. You also pay for the domain name itself, usually about $10 to $20 a year.

Links on bit.ly stay with Bitly, so keep that account active for as long as they must work. Create new links on your own domain from now on. Our Bitly migration guide covers the steps.

It depends on the vendor. Bitly, Rebrandly and Dub cap links created each month. Short.io issues branded links once for the account, and Rdyrct caps the links you have active at one time. Compare the unit, not just the number.

What analytics does a URL shortener give you?

Clicks over time, plus country, device and referrer. The difference between tools is how long they keep the history, from 7 days on Rdyrct Free to five years on Dub Advanced.

How do I know if a shortener stores visitor IP addresses?

Read its privacy policy and ask support, since pricing pages rarely say. Rdyrct states that it never stores an IP address and keeps only country, referrer, device and time.

It varies and is worth checking before you print anything. On Rdyrct, a downgrade never deletes anything: links keep redirecting, an organization over its plan becomes read-only, and custom domains keep serving for 30 days. Ask any other vendor the same question.

You can test the ranking above in a few minutes. Rdyrct's Free plan gives you 30 links, click tracking and a QR code generator, with no card and no trial clock. Create a link, share it, and watch the clicks come in with country, device and referrer, all without any visitor's IP address being kept. If you need your own domain later, Hobby adds one for $4 a month, and Pro is $9. Everything runs on Cloudflare, and the code is public if you would rather host it yourself.
