Shorter links on rdyr.cc
From today, a new short link on rdyrct's shared domain looks like this:
rdyr.cc/k7m2xqp
Before, it looked like this:
rdyrct.com/k7m2xqp
Three characters is not much, but a short link is made for the places where every character counts: a text message, a slide, a flyer, a link somebody reads out on a podcast and a listener has to type. The shorter the domain, the less there is to get wrong.
Your old links keep working
Nothing you have already shared changes. Every link on rdyrct.com still works, and will keep working. Each shared-domain link now answers on both domains: rdyrct.com/k7m2xqp and rdyr.cc/k7m2xqp go to the same place and count in the same analytics.
A QR code you printed last month with an rdyrct.com link does not need reprinting.
rdyr.cc only redirects
rdyr.cc does one job. It has no sign-in page, no app and no API. A request for anything that is not a short link gets a 404, and the bare domain sends you to rdyrct.com.
That split is deliberate. Your account lives on rdyrct.com, and your session never reaches rdyr.cc. The domain you see in a short link is never the domain where you type a password, so a link on it can only ever send you somewhere else.
What stays the same
- Slugs on the shared domain stay random, on every plan, so nobody can claim the good ones. Choosing your own slug comes with a custom domain.
- Links on your own custom domain do not change.
- A click still records its country, referrer, device and time, and never an IP address.
- rdyr.cc is free on every plan, and there is nothing to switch on. New links use it from now on.
The shortener on the homepage hands out rdyr.cc links too: paste a URL and you get one back, no account needed.
Running your own rdyrct?
A second short domain is optional on a self-hosted instance. Attach the domain to your Worker, check that it answers with a redirect, then set it as the SHARED_LINK_HOST secret. Until you do, links use your app's own domain, the same as before. The README has the steps.
Make your first rdyr.cc link. It takes a few seconds and the free plan has no time limit.
